One of the Pancha Bhuta Stalas, Ekambareswarar enshrines Lord Shiva as the Prithvi Linga (Earth element). The temple is one of the largest in South India, with a towering 59-metre Rajagopuram (main gateway tower) built in Vijayanagara style. The inner sanctum houses a Shivalinga beneath an ancient mango tree, said to be 3,500 years old with four branches representing the four Vedas. An extraordinary sight that no pilgrim should miss.
One of the three most celebrated Shakti Peethas in South India (along with Madurai Meenakshi and Tiruvannamalai), Kamakshi Amman is the presiding goddess of Kanchipuram. Adi Shankaracharya is said to have installed the Sri Chakra at this temple and established his peetham here. The seated form of the goddess — rare among Devi temples — radiates a uniquely serene power.

The presiding deity Devaraja Perumal (Lord Vishnu) stands atop a massive 100-pillar hall with exquisitely carved stone columns. The Atthi Varadar — a Fig-wood idol submerged in the temple tank for 40 years and displayed for 48 days once every 40 years — draws millions of devotees.
