Kapila Teertham and ISKCON in one plan
Kapila Teertham and the ISKCON temple Tirupati are two very different places that fit naturally into one outing. Kapila Teertham is an old Shiva shrine at the foot of the Tirumala hills with a waterfall and a sacred pool. The ISKCON temple, on the other side of town, is a modern Krishna temple known for its calm atmosphere and clean grounds.
Both are within a short drive of Tirupati city, so a Tirupati to Kapila Teertham taxi or a cab from Tirupati to ISKCON temple is quick, and the two can be combined with other nearby temples.
Kapileswara Swamy temple and the waterfall
Kapila Teertham is also known as the Kapileswara Swamy temple and is among the few Shiva shrines directly linked with the Tirumala-Tirupati temple trust. According to tradition, the Shiva linga here was installed by the sage Kapila, which gives the place its name.
A waterfall drops from the hill into a large pool in front of the temple. After monsoon rain it is at its best, while in dry months the flow can be thin. Local belief treats the pool as holy, and many visitors sprinkle the water on their heads. Bathing rules can change, so follow the signs.
Mahashivaratri is the biggest festival here and attracts large crowds. Other days are calm, and the surroundings, with the hill rising behind, make it a pleasant stop.
ISKCON Sri Sri Radha Govinda temple
The ISKCON temple Tirupati is dedicated to Radha and Krishna in the form of Sri Sri Radha Govinda. It is run by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness and is built in a modern style with gardens, a prayer hall and a prasadam counter.
Visitors can attend the arati, listen to kirtan and buy books and souvenirs. The atmosphere is quieter than at the main Tirupati temples, which many families, especially those with children and elders, appreciate.
Aarti timings listed online differ, so confirm locally if you want to catch a specific service.
How the trip works with a cab
Our drivers collect you from your hotel, the railway station or the airport and take you to both places in one trip. A sensible order is Kapila Teertham first, then a stop for tea or lunch, and ISKCON next, with a gap for the afternoon break in temple hours.
Both are also stops on our one day Tirupati temples tour, together with Tiruchanur, Govindarajaswami, Sreenivasa Mangapuram and Chandragiri.
Entry to the temples is handled by the pilgrim directly. We provide the vehicle and driver only, and the driver waits nearby while you are inside.
Practical tips
Wear footwear that is easy to remove, and carry a spare cloth if you plan to touch the water. Rocks near the pool can be slippery after rain.
Food inside ISKCON is vegetarian, and there is a restaurant on site in many listings. Carry water, since the day can be hot.
Mobile phone and camera rules vary between the two temples, so check the signs at each gate.
A sedan suits up to four people. Bigger families or groups with elders usually pick an SUV or tempo traveller.
If you only have a few hours between a train arrival and a departure, this pair is a sensible choice because both stops are close to the main roads and need no long walks. Tell the driver your train or flight time when you book so the plan leaves a safe margin.
The steps down to the pool at Kapila Teertham are open to the weather, so an umbrella helps in the rainy season. Ask locally whether the waterfall is flowing well before you set out, since the volume changes with the season.
