The idea of this circuit
Tamil Nadu has some of the finest living temples in India, and a South India temple tour from Tirupati lets you see several of them in one loop without changing vehicles. This 6-day plan follows a sensible clockwise route: Kanchipuram, Chidambaram, Thanjavur, Madurai, Rameswaram and then a long return to Tirupati. Distances are approximate road figures and you should treat them as estimates; your driver may adjust the route according to road and weather.
We are a taxi and tour vehicle service. We provide the cab and driver for the whole circuit, while hotels, temple entry, tickets and queues are handled by you directly. Overnight stays are arranged by the traveller.
Kanchipuram: the temple city
Kanchipuram is about 115 km from Tirupati and takes roughly 2.5 to 3 hours. It is known for the Kamakshi Amman temple, the Ekambareswarar temple, with its tall gopuram, the Kailasanathar temple from the Pallava era and the Varadaraja Perumal temple. The city is also famous for silk sarees, and many travellers stop at weaving shops, so allow time and buy only what you want.
Chidambaram: the Nataraja temple
From Kanchipuram, Chidambaram is roughly 180 km away, about 4 to 5 hours, along the coastal side via Pondicherry or inland through Villupuram. The Thillai Nataraja temple is dedicated to Shiva as the cosmic dancer and is known for its tall gateway towers and a golden-roofed sanctum. It follows special worship customs, so confirm timings and the practices of the priests locally.
Thanjavur: the Brihadisvara temple
Thanjavur is about 110 km from Chidambaram, 2.5 to 3 hours. The Brihadisvara temple, built by the Chola ruler Rajaraja I over 1,000 years ago, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is known for its tall vimana tower and fine sculpture. The Thanjavur palace, art gallery and Saraswati Mahal Library are also in the town.
Madurai and Rameswaram
Madurai is about 190 km from Thanjavur, 4 to 4.5 hours. The Meenakshi Amman temple, with its colourful gopurams, is the highlight, and a night here allows an evening and a morning visit. Rameswaram is another 175 km, roughly 3.5 hours. The Ramanathaswamy temple with its 22 theerthams, the Pamban bridge and Dhanushkodi are the main attractions, and the coast is best seen in the morning.
The final leg from Rameswaram to Tirupati is a full day of about 640 km and 12 to 13 hours. It is long, so travellers who prefer a slower pace can add a seventh day with a night halt at Madurai or Tiruchirappalli on the way.
Who this circuit suits
The plan suits families, senior citizens and small groups who want a steady pace with one hotel change per day. Each daily leg is between two and five hours, so there is time at every temple. If you have less time, a four-day version can cover Kanchipuram, Thanjavur and Madurai only, and a longer version can add Tiruchirappalli (Srirangam) between Thanjavur and Madurai. Tell us your dates and group size, and we will suggest a pace that fits.
Early starts are recommended because temples close for a few hours in the afternoon, and the long coastal roads are easier before the midday heat. Ask your driver to confirm the next day start time every evening.
Practical tips
Book hotels in advance at Madurai and Rameswaram in the festival season. Carry modest clothing for each temple, a towel and a dry change for the Rameswaram bath, and keep a small bag only. Keep medicines handy for seniors. Fuel, tolls, parking and driver night charges follow the outstation terms shared when you book. This page was checked in October 2026; confirm timings locally.
Timings and dress code
- Timings
- Each temple sets its own timings, usually a morning session and an evening session with a midday break. Confirm locally; festival days change them.
- Dress code
- Modest traditional clothing at all temples: dhoti or trousers with shirt for men, saree or salwar kameez for women. Shoulders and knees covered; footwear removed. Rules on phones and cameras vary by temple.
Last checked October 2026. Timings and rules can change, so please confirm locally. We provide taxi service only. Temple entry and any tickets are arranged by the pilgrim directly with the temple.
