What is Girivalam?
Girivalam, also called Giri Pradakshina, is the practice of walking around Arunachala hill in Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu. The circuit is about 14 km, and pilgrims keep the hill on their right while they walk. The hill itself is considered a form of Shiva, which is why many walk it quietly, chanting or in silence, and usually barefoot.
People walk Girivalam for many reasons: to fulfil a vow, to pray for a family member, or simply as a spiritual practice. Because of the distance, a Girivalam Tiruvannamalai taxi is useful for families who want to reach the town comfortably and have a reliable vehicle waiting at the end.
The eight lingams on the route
The path passes eight directional lingam shrines, the Ashta Lingams. Going around from the east they are commonly listed as Indra Lingam (east), Agni Lingam (south-east), Yama Lingam (south), Nirithi Lingam (south-west), Varuna Lingam (west), Vayu Lingam (north-west), Kubera Lingam (north) and Eesanya Lingam (north-east). Each is linked with a guardian of a direction.
Sources and local guides sometimes differ on details, such as extra shrines to the Sun and Moon along the way. The benefits traditionally linked with each lingam are matters of belief rather than fixed rules, so treat them as a guide and not a checklist.
Best time to do Girivalam and the full moon tradition
Full moon nights are the traditional favourites, and the monthly Pournami Girivalam draws a very large crowd. The route is busy and many shops stay open late. If you prefer a calmer walk, choose an ordinary weekday morning, ideally between November and February when the weather is cooler.
Karthigai Deepam, held in the Tamil month of Karthigai (November to December), is the biggest event of the year. A great flame is lit at the top of the hill, followed by Girivalam by very large numbers of pilgrims. Town access and parking are heavily regulated on those days, so confirm your plans locally and leave extra time. Pournami dates change each month, so check a Tamil calendar for the exact day.
Rules and etiquette for walkers
Most walkers go barefoot and keep to the left side of the road. Stay quiet, avoid loud music, and do not litter. Carry your plastic home or use the bins provided. Bring water, a light snack and a torch for a night walk.
The usual custom is to start at the Arunachaleswarar Temple: many people offer prayers at the east gate and then begin the walk. Pilgrims with knee problems, elders and young children should not attempt the full walk; they can instead join at a nearby lingam shrine or wait at the temple.
Temple entry and any tickets are handled by pilgrims directly with the temple. We provide only the vehicle and driver.
How a cab from Tirupati helps the family
Tiruvannamalai is about 190 km from Tirupati by road, roughly four hours each way. A dedicated cab means you travel on your own timing, rest in the vehicle, and keep your belongings safe while you walk. Our driver can wait for you at the temple or at a convenient end point and later drive you to your overnight stay or back to Tirupati.
Vehicle access around the hill is often restricted on full moon days and festival nights. The driver will stop where traffic is allowed and you can agree a meeting point; confirm the local arrangements before you start walking.
A realistic plan for a family is to leave Tirupati early, reach Tiruvannamalai in the morning, visit the temple, rest, walk in the evening, and stay overnight in the town (hotels are arranged by you). Ask us about a two-day schedule if you plan to finish the full circuit. For a quick one-day option without Girivalam, see our Tirupati to Tiruvannamalai taxi page.
