About Yaganti Uma Maheswara Temple
Yaganti is a small hill village in Nandyal district of Andhra Pradesh, close to Banaganapalle and about 80 to 100 km from Kurnool. The Yaganti Uma Maheswara Temple is dedicated to Shiva and Parvati, who are worshipped here in a single unified form carved from one stone. This is unusual: in most Shiva temples the deity is a lingam, but here devotees see Uma Maheswara together.
The temple is set against rocky hills with natural caves and a spring-fed pond. If you are searching for a Tirupati to Yaganti taxi, you are probably planning a longer pilgrimage that goes beyond the usual Tirupati circuit, and it helps to know that this is a remote and quiet site compared with the large temple towns.
Legends and history
According to local tradition, the sage Agastya wanted to install an idol of Venkateswara here, but the toe nail of the image broke, so he could not complete the consecration. He prayed to Shiva, who said the place resembled Kailash, and Agastya then asked that Uma Maheswara be worshipped here. That is why the temple has a connection with both Shaiva and Vaishnava traditions.
The temple is attributed to the Sangama dynasty of the Vijayanagara Empire in the 15th century, with Harihara Bukka Raya usually named. The site was an important place of worship in later centuries too. These accounts rely on tradition and on reference summaries, so treat the dates as indicative.
Another popular belief says that the stone Nandi in front of the temple keeps growing slowly, and that crows do not come to Yaganti because of a curse by Agastya. These are matters of faith and local lore, not facts to be verified.
What to see
The Pushkarini, a pond fed by water that flows through the mouth of a Nandi statue, is where many devotees bathe before worship. The caves on the hill include the Agastya cave, reached by about 120 steep steps; the Venkateswara cave, with a damaged image that is not worshipped; and the Veera Brahmam cave, where the saint Veera Brahmendra Swami is said to have written part of his prophetic work. The Veera Brahmam cave has a low ceiling, so you must stoop to enter.
Plan some time for the walk up to the caves; the steps are uneven and can be tiring for elders. Wear shoes you can slip on and off, and carry water. Maha Shivaratri is the main festival and draws crowds from across the state.
How the Tirupati to Yaganti cab trip works
The road distance is roughly 300 km one way, and the drive typically takes six to seven hours depending on the route through Kadapa, Nandyal or Kurnool and the state of the roads. We could not verify an exact figure from an official source, so the distance here is an estimate; please check it on your map app. A same-day return would mean about twelve hours on the road, which is not comfortable, so we recommend two days.
A practical plan: leave Tirupati early on day one, reach Yaganti by afternoon, visit the temple and caves, and stay overnight nearby (Banaganapalle, Nandyal or Kurnool; you arrange the stay). Return to Tirupati on day two. We provide only the vehicle and driver; temple entry and any tickets are handled by you directly with the temple.
If you want to add other places on the same route, Srisailam and Ahobilam are on a similar side of Andhra Pradesh. See our Tirupati to Srisailam taxi and Ahobilam Narasimha Temple pages.
Practical tips
Services near Yaganti are limited, so carry water, snacks and basic medicines. Fuel and meals are easier to find in the larger towns on the way. Cash is useful in small shops.
Temple timings from different sources do not agree, mainly on when the morning session ends, so confirm locally on the day. The temple office or local priests can tell you the current schedule.
Dress modestly and be ready to remove footwear at the temple. If you are travelling with elderly family members, decide beforehand whether they will climb to the caves.
