About Chandragiri Fort

Chandragiri Fort Tirupati is a historic fort on a rocky hill at the town of Chandragiri, around 15 km from Tirupati. It is not a pilgrimage site in itself, so it works as a relaxed break between temple visits and appeals to families who enjoy history and photography.

The fort is split into a lower fort, where the main palaces and the museum stand, and an upper hill fort that was used for defence. Most visitors spend their time in the lower area.

History in brief

Local tradition dates the fort to around the 11th century, built by local chiefs. It later passed to the Vijayanagara kings, who used it as a stronghold. In the late 16th and early 17th centuries it served as a capital of the Vijayanagara rulers after the empire's decline in the north.

It is also linked with a well-known land grant made in 1639 near Madras, which led to the founding of the British settlement at Fort St George. This connection to the history of Chennai is what draws many history lovers here.

Later the fort passed to the Golconda sultans and other rulers before coming under British administration. Details differ in accounts, so treat precise dates with some caution.

What to see

The Raja Mahal and the Rani Mahal are the two main palace buildings. The Raja Mahal is a multi-storeyed structure with arches and a tall tower, and it now holds the archaeological museum.

The museum displays stone and metal sculptures from Shaiva, Vaishnava and Jain traditions, along with bronzes from the Chola and Vijayanagara periods. It is small, so an hour is enough.

Other things to look for are the fort walls, the old gateways, a pond and the stepped paths on the hill. A sound-and-light show has been reported at the fort, but older schedules appear outdated and one guide notes it was once suspended, so confirm locally whether it is running.

How the trip works with a cab

A cab from Tirupati to Chandragiri Fort is the easiest option, since there is no regular transport near the fort gate and autos may not wait. Our driver can take you from Tirupati, wait during your visit and bring you back, or add Chandragiri to a longer local plan.

Chandragiri is one stop in our one day Tirupati temples tour, along with Tiruchanur, Govindarajaswami, Kapila Teertham, ISKCON and Sreenivasa Mangapuram.

Any entry fee or ticket for the fort and museum is paid by you at the counter. We provide the vehicle and driver only.

Practical tips

Carry water, a hat and sun protection, as the walking is on open ground. Wear sturdy shoes, because some steps are uneven.

Since timings, fees and the show status differ across sources, confirm them locally or at the counter. Avoid Fridays if you want the museum open.

Late afternoon visits give softer light for photos. If a show is running, it would be an evening plan, so ask about it before you commit.

A sedan is fine for up to four people. Larger families usually choose an SUV or tempo traveller.

Chandragiri pairs well with Sreenivasa Mangapuram on the same side of town, so ask the driver to combine them if you are short of time. A visit here also suits older children, who often enjoy the open spaces more than another queue at a temple.

There are few food stalls close to the fort, so carry snacks and water, or plan a meal in the city before or after. Keep your tickets handy because you may need them at both the fort gate and the museum entrance.
