Akasa Ganga: the sacred waterfall

Akasa Ganga, "the Ganga of the sky", is a waterfall and teertham in the Tirumala hills, commonly placed about 3 km north of the Sri Venkateswara temple. Tradition holds that water from this source is carried to the temple for the deity's daily ritual bath, which gives the place a special standing among the hill teerthams. The spot is shaded by forest, and pilgrims come to see the fall, offer a prayer and enjoy the calm.

As with most waterfalls in the Eastern Ghats, the flow is seasonal. It is best after the rains and weaker in the hot months, so if the waterfall itself is the point of your trip, plan between October and February and confirm conditions locally.

Japali Anjaneya and Japali Teertham

Japali Teertham and the shrine of Japali Anjaneya lie deeper in the Seshachalam forest. Tradition connects the place with the sage Japali (Jabali), who is said to have meditated here, and the shrine is dedicated to Lord Hanuman. Some devotional writers also associate this area with the birthplace of Hanuman, linking it to the hill called Anjanadri, though sources differ on the details.

The shrine is not on the main road. A traveller listing describes a walk of about 1 km through the forest to reach it, where you may see monkeys and squirrels on the way. Distances from Tirumala are quoted differently by different sources (roughly 4 to 7 km), so treat the figures on this page as approximate and confirm locally. The nearby teertham is a natural spring, small and quiet, and a good place to rest.

Please do not confuse Japali with the Bedi Anjaneya Swamy temple, which stands opposite the main Tirumala temple. They are two separate Hanuman shrines.

Combining it with other Tirumala spots

Akasa Ganga and Japali are on the same side of the hills as Papavinasanam, so many travellers visit all three in order. Near the main temple lie the Silathoranam natural arch and Chakra Teertha. The Srivari Pushkarini, the holy tank next to the Venkateswara temple, is another common stop. Together these make a full sightseeing day from Tirupati with the cab waiting at each point.

If you are looking for a Tirupati to Akasa Ganga taxi, note that these places are normally covered in a single Tirumala local-sightseeing day rather than as separate trips, since the ghat road climb is the longest part of the journey.

How the trip works with a cab

From Tirupati the ghat road to Tirumala is about 22 km and takes around 45 to 60 minutes. The hill roads to Akasa Ganga and Japali add roughly 3 to 5 km. The one-way distance is therefore about 25 to 27 km, and the figure we use for planning is 26 km. Your driver can wait at the roadside while you walk to the waterfall or the shrine.

We are a taxi and tour-vehicle service only. We do not arrange temple entry, tickets or queue access. If you also want to visit the main Venkateswara temple, tickets and entry are handled by you directly with TTD. Rules about where private vehicles may stop inside Tirumala can change, so confirm locally which points your car can reach.

Practical tips

Carry water, a hat and a light rain cover in the monsoon. The forest path to Japali can be uneven, so older pilgrims and small children should go slowly or skip the walk if they are not comfortable. Keep food packed away to avoid attracting monkeys, and never feed wildlife.

Start early, ideally by 6 AM from Tirupati, so you have time for all stops and an unhurried return before the evening ghat traffic. A sedan works for small groups; choose an SUV or tempo traveller for larger families. Because no official timings were verifiable for these spots, we recommend asking at the Tirumala enquiry counters before you head out.
