How the Tirupati to Chennai taxi trip works
The road distance from Tirupati to Chennai is about 135 km and the drive takes three to three and a half hours, most of it on the four-lane national highway through Tiruttani and Tiruvallur. The last stretch inside Chennai depends on city traffic and on whether you are headed to the airport, Chennai Central or a city address.
We run this route in both directions every week: pilgrims returning home after darshan, families landing at Chennai airport and heading straight to Tirupati, and travellers catching trains or flights. You can book a round trip with waiting, or ask for a one-way drop quote on WhatsApp — one-way transfers are quoted per trip based on the day.
The round-trip fare in the table below is billed on a 300 km minimum at the per-km rate, with vehicle, driver and fuel included. Toll, parking and inter-state permit charges are extra at actuals.
Chennai airport pickups and drops
Chennai International Airport (MAA) is the main gateway for overseas pilgrims visiting Tirumala. We track your arrival time, the driver meets you at the arrivals exit with a name board, and you are in Tirupati about three and a half hours later — often faster than waiting for a connecting train.
For departures, we plan the pickup from your Tirupati hotel backwards from your check-in time with a safety margin for highway and city traffic. For very early international flights this usually means a night departure from Tirupati; the route is a well-lit national highway and our drivers do it regularly.
Stops worth adding on the way
The highway passes close to the Tiruttani Subramanya Swamy temple, one of the six abodes of Lord Murugan, about an hour from Tirupati. A darshan stop there adds roughly one to two hours to the journey and is a popular addition for pilgrims.
With a full day in hand you can also turn the trip into a two-day circuit covering Kanchipuram and Mahabalipuram or Pondicherry — see our package pages for those routes. Temple entry and tickets at every stop are handled by you directly.
Practical tips
Carry ID for everyone travelling; it is needed at hotel check-ins and occasionally at inter-state checkposts.
If you are travelling with elders, ask for the Innova Crysta — the extra legroom matters on a three-hour-plus drive.
Chennai traffic peaks roughly 8 to 11 AM and 5 to 9 PM. If your schedule is flexible, time your entry into the city outside those windows.
