Why pilgrims go to Rameswaram

Rameswaram sits on Pamban island in the Gulf of Mannar and holds the Ramanathaswamy temple, which devotees count among the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva. It is also considered one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites. According to tradition, Rama worshipped Shiva here before and after the war in Lanka, and the town is closely tied to the Ramayana story. For many south Indian families, a Tirupati to Rameswaram taxi trip is a once-in-a-lifetime journey, often planned together with Madurai on the way.

The Ramanathaswamy temple and the 22 theerthams

The temple is known for its long pillared corridors, which are often described as among the longest in India, and for its tall gateway towers. The corridors are lined with carved pillars and are cool and atmospheric even in summer. The complex was built up over several centuries by local rulers, including the Sethupathis of Ramnad, who were major patrons.

A central ritual for pilgrims is bathing in the 22 theerthams, sacred water points inside the temple complex. Most visitors start with a dip in the sea at Agni Theertham and then walk through the temple while attendants pour water from the wells over the pilgrim. A ticket is needed for the well-bathing section, and the circuit can take anywhere from under an hour to a couple of hours depending on the crowd. Carry a dry set of clothes and a plastic bag for wet ones. Entry, bathing tickets and any priest services are arranged by you directly at the temple; we do not book them.

Pamban bridge, Dhanushkodi and other places to see

The road to Rameswaram crosses the sea on the Annai Indira Gandhi road bridge, running alongside the railway bridge at Pamban. The older railway bridge and the newer vertical-lift rail bridge are a popular photo stop for travellers. The cab driver can pause at a safe viewing point on the mainland or island side.

Dhanushkodi lies about 18 to 20 km east of Rameswaram at the tip of the island. The old town was largely destroyed by a cyclone in 1964, and the ruined church and railway remains are visited today. The road ends near Arichal Munai, where the sea meets on two sides. Access beyond a certain point is controlled by the local authorities, so ask on the day about the permitted area and timings, and carry water and sun protection.

Other stops include Gandhamadhana Parvatham, Panchamukha Hanuman temple, and the memorial to Dr A P J Abdul Kalam. The Kothandaramaswamy temple on the way to Dhanushkodi is also visited. Check current hours locally.

How the Tirupati to Rameswaram trip works with a cab

The road runs from Tirupati through Vellore, Tiruvannamalai or Villupuram side, Tiruchirappalli, Pudukkottai or Karaikudi and Ramanathapuram before reaching the island. Published figures range from about 600 to 650 km, so we plan for roughly 640 km one way and a long 12 to 13 hour drive. Because of this length, we recommend three days: day 1 for the drive and evening rest, day 2 for the temple, theerthams and Dhanushkodi, and day 3 for the return.

Many pilgrims combine the trip with Madurai, about 175 km before Rameswaram, by staying a night there on the way. That adds a day but makes the drive less tiring. Overnight stays are arranged by the traveller: you book your own hotel or lodge in Rameswaram or Madurai, and we provide the cab and driver. Temple-run guest houses and private lodges both exist; ask the temple office or a trusted contact.

Please keep your driver informed of your timing preferences the previous evening so he can plan rest hours properly. Fuel, tolls, parking and driver night charges follow the outstation terms shared when you book.

Practical tips

Start the temple visit early in the morning when queues are shorter and the sea is calmer. Do not go into the sea if the lifeguards or temple staff say conditions are rough. Wear clothes you do not mind getting wet and bring a towel. Keep money, phones and jewellery safe, since the bathing area is crowded.

The heat and humidity are high through most of the year, so carry water, a cap and light cotton clothes for the drive. Seniors in the group should rest well on day 1. This page was last checked in October 2026; please confirm all timings and access rules locally.
