Annavaram and the Satyanarayana Swamy temple

Annavaram is a small town in the East Godavari region of Andhra Pradesh, and its temple sits on Ratnagiri hill beside the Pampa river. The deity is Sri Veera Venkata Satyanarayana Swamy, a form of Vishnu that is also worshipped with Anantha Lakshmi and the sacred yantra of the temple. The hill is shaped like a chariot, and the main shrine is arranged in two levels, with the sanctum above and a lower level used for ritual worship.

The temple is known across the Telugu states for the Satyanarayana Vratam, a simple puja performed by couples and families, often for new beginnings such as a wedding, a new home or a child. A Tirupati to Annavaram taxi is popular with families who want to perform this vratam as a pilgrimage in itself. Details of vratam booking, items and fees are handled by the pilgrim directly with the Devasthanam.

What to see and how the visit goes

Pilgrims can reach the top by steps or by a vehicle road. The steps are a long climb, so older travellers usually go by road. Inside the complex you will see the main shrine, the Vana Durga shrine, and the vratam mandapams where group pujas are conducted. Views from the hill cover the Pampa valley, the nearby Pampa reservoir and the surrounding villages.

Many travellers also visit Rajahmundry, the Godavari river ghats and Antarvedi on the same trip, since they are on the way. If you want a boat ride on the Godavari or a short stop at Draksharamam or Samalkot, we can plan the stops.

Temple entry, vratam tickets and queues are handled by the pilgrim directly with the temple. We provide only the vehicle and driver.

Route and driving plan

The road goes north from Tirupati along the coastal highway through Naidupeta, Nellore, Ongole, Vijayawada and Eluru, then crosses the Godavari near Rajahmundry before turning towards Annavaram. Published sources give between about 640 and 660 km, and we plan around 645 km one way. The round trip is therefore about 1300 km, including local movement.

This is too long for two days of comfortable driving. A sensible plan is to drive about 11 hours on day one and stay overnight near Rajahmundry or Annavaram, visit the temple on day two, and begin the long return with a halt at Vijayawada or Nellore. Day three completes the return. The traveller books these hotels. We do not arrange accommodation.

Choose the vehicle based on comfort over a long distance. An Innova class MPV or SUV works for families, and a tempo traveller suits large groups. Our drivers handle night halts and early starts as part of the multi-day booking.

Extending the trip along the Godavari

Because you will already be near Rajahmundry, many pilgrims add a halt at the Godavari ghats in the evening, which is a pleasant way to break the long drive. The river region also has other temples and the Dowleswaram barrage, and a short boat ride is possible in some seasons. These stops are optional and the traveller chooses them based on time.

Keep in mind that the return is the same long road, so avoid adding too many extras if your group includes elderly passengers. A relaxed pace with early starts is better than a tight schedule. Share your preferred departure time and group size when booking so the driver can plan rest breaks and meal stops.

Practical tips

If you plan to perform the Satyanarayana Vratam, ask the temple about the slot, the items needed and the dress code at least a few days ahead, and carry a printed ticket. The temple has been reported to close in the evening and not allow entry after closing, so avoid arriving at the last minute.

Keep rain gear if you go during the monsoon, and expect hot weather in summer. For nearby Andhra temples, Simhachalam is further along the same coastal route, and Vijayawada Kanaka Durga is a natural halt on the way.
