Tirupati to Ahobilam Taxi: Nava Narasimha Temples in the Nallamala Hills
Ahobilam is about 300 km from Tirupati near Allagadda in Nandyal district, and a cab trip works best as two days so the nine Narasimha shrines are not rushed.

Ahobilam, the Nava Narasimha kshetram
Ahobilam is a forest-hill pilgrimage place in the Nallamala range where, according to tradition, Lord Vishnu appeared as Narasimha to save the child devotee Prahlada from the demon king Hiranyakashipu. Nine forms of Narasimha are worshipped at separate shrines in the area, which is why it is called the Nava Narasimha kshetram. The name is often explained as a combination of the words for great strength and a cave. A Tirupati to Ahobilam taxi is the easiest way to reach it, because public transport inside the forest area is limited.
The settlement is divided into Lower (Eguva) Ahobilam, with the main Ahobila Narasimha and Prahladavarada temple complex at the foot of the hill, and Upper (Diguva) Ahobilam, higher up. Some of the nine shrines sit in the forest along streams and rocky paths between them.
The nine shrines and the trek
Guides list the nine as Jwala Narasimha, Ahobila Narasimha, Malola Narasimha, Kroda or Varaha Narasimha, Karanja Narasimha, Bhargava Narasimha, Yogananda Narasimha, Chatravata Narasimha and Pavana Narasimha. Upper Ahobilam has Ahobila, Kroda, Malola and Jwala; Lower Ahobilam has Chatravata, Bhargava, Yogananda and Pavana; Karanja lies between the two.
Reaching the more remote shrines needs walking on forest tracks and rocky steps. Jeeps are commonly hired from Lower Ahobilam for the Pavana and Bhargava side, and the rides are bumpy. The hike to the farther shrines and the viewpoint of the Ugra Sthambham can take several hours and is not suitable for very elderly or unwell visitors. Most families visit the lower and upper temples and a few easy shrines, and treat the full set of nine as a separate, longer trek with local guides.
Access can be affected in the rainy season through slippery tracks or blocked jeep routes, according to visitor reports. Ask locally before you start. Temple entry, jeep hire and any guide are arranged by the pilgrim directly on the spot. We provide the car and driver only.
How the trip works with a cab
The road goes from Tirupati towards Renigunta, then Kadapa, and continues on the highway towards Nandyal until Allagadda. A turn off the highway near Allagadda leads about 25 km into the foothills to Lower Ahobilam. Map sources vary, so we plan about 300 km one way, giving roughly 600 km for the round trip plus about 40 km of local movement between Lower and Upper Ahobilam.
A day trip is possible only with a very early start, and it leaves little time for the temples. The better plan is to reach by early afternoon, see the lower temple and rest, then complete the upper temples and a short jeep or trek in the morning before the return drive. Accommodation near Ahobilam is simple, and the traveller books it directly. We do not book hotels.
Our drivers are used to hilly stretches. A sedan or SUV suits couples, an Innova class MPV suits families, and a tempo traveller suits groups. The final road is narrow, so a very large coach is not ideal.
Why two days make sense
Ahobilam looks close on the map, but the last part of the road is slow and the forest tracks take time. A guide can be useful for the farther shrines, because some paths are not clearly marked, and local jeep drivers know which routes are open after rain. Do not plan to hurry the shrines, since each has its own approach, and pilgrims often prefer to spend a quiet moment at each.
Families with young children or senior members usually do Lower Ahobilam, Upper Ahobilam and the Prahlada-related spots near the road, and leave the long forest circuit to fit and experienced walkers. Carry enough drinking water, avoid late afternoon walks, and tell the driver your expected return time so he can wait at the right place.
Practical tips
Carry water, snacks, and a small first aid kit. Mobile coverage is patchy in the forest. Start treks early, avoid them in the afternoon heat, and keep to marked paths. Remove footwear outside temples, and expect monkeys.
Ahobilam combines well with Srisailam on a longer circuit, since both are in the Nallamala range and on the Kadapa and Nandyal side. For nearby forest and hill options see our other Andhra temple pages.
Timings and dress code
- Timings
- Guides give a split schedule for Lower Ahobilam (morning and evening sessions) and Upper Ahobilam (a slightly earlier close), with a midday break, but sources disagree. Confirm with the Ahobilam Devasthanam, and ask about jeep availability.
- Dress code
- Modest traditional wear for the temples. For trekking to the forest shrines, wear comfortable clothes and sturdy footwear that can be removed easily. Confirm temple rules locally.
Last checked October 2026. Timings and rules can change, so please confirm locally. We provide taxi service only. Temple entry and any tickets are arranged by the pilgrim directly with the temple.
