Kanaka Durga temple on Indrakeeladri hill

The Kanaka Durga temple stands on Indrakeeladri, a rocky hill on the bank of the Krishna river in Vijayawada. The goddess Durga is worshipped here as Kanaka Durga, and local tradition holds that the image is self-manifested. The hill gets its name from Indra, who in the legend worshipped the goddess here. Together with the Malleswara Swamy shrine, the complex draws pilgrims from across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

The Tirupati to Vijayawada Kanaka Durga temple taxi trip works well for travellers who want to combine Tirumala with another major Shakti shrine. The Dasara festival, held in the Navaratri days, is the most important event here, and during it the goddess is decorated in a different form each day. For a quieter visit, choose another time of year.

What to see in and around Vijayawada

The temple climb offers views of the city, the Krishna river and the Prakasam Barrage. Indrakeeladri is connected by a vehicle road and by steps, and reports suggest that private vehicle access is restricted at some hours, so check the arrangement for the day you visit.

Nearby places that can be added with a cab are Bhavani Island in the Krishna river, the Prakasam Barrage viewpoint, the rock-cut Undavalli caves and the ancient Mogalarajapuram caves. Allow two to three hours for the temple and its queue on an ordinary day and extra time at festivals.

Temple entry, queues, any paid ticket and accommodation are handled directly by the pilgrim with the temple authorities. Mobile phones and bags may need to be left in lockers, so keep valuables to a minimum.

How the trip works with a cab

The route runs from Tirupati through Naidupeta and Nellore, then Ongole, Chilakaluripet and Guntur on the coastal highway to Vijayawada. Sources quote between about 380 and 415 km, and we plan around 400 km one way. That is roughly 830 km for the round trip including local movement in the city.

A one-day return is too tiring, since you would drive close to 16 hours in total. We recommend leaving early on day one, reaching Vijayawada by afternoon, visiting the riverfront and Bhavani Island in the evening, then going to the temple early the next morning before the queue grows. The drive back can be done on day two or you can split it at Nellore.

Hotels are not booked by us. The traveller arranges the overnight stay. Our drivers will help with route planning and parking, and you can choose a sedan, SUV, Innova class vehicle or tempo traveller depending on the group.

Planning around crowds and the season

Vijayawada is hot and humid for much of the year, so mornings are the best time for the hill. Late afternoon queues on weekends can stretch for hours, while a weekday morning is usually calmer. During Dasara the city sees enormous crowds, traffic diversions and restricted vehicle movement near the river and hill, which can add a lot of time to the last few kilometres of any cab trip. If your dates are flexible, a non-festival week gives a much more relaxed visit.

Parking close to the hill can be tight. Our drivers drop you at the nearest permitted point and wait at the agreed spot, and you should keep the driver number handy because temple queues can run longer than planned. Elderly travellers should carry any medicines and plan rest breaks between the car and the shrine. If you are travelling with children, a hat, water and light snacks make the wait easier.

Practical tips

Wear footwear that is easy to remove, carry water, and expect steps if you use the pilgrim path. Senior citizens should ask about the vehicle road or lift options at the temple. Photography inside the sanctum is restricted. Festival weeks, Fridays and Sundays are crowded, so go on a weekday for shorter queues.

If you want to extend the trip, Amaravati Amaralingeswara temple and Annavaram are reachable from Vijayawada. For a different direction from Tirupati, consider Srisailam or Ahobilam.
