About Papavinasanam Teertham

Papavinasanam, literally "the destroyer of sins", is one of the best known sacred waters in the Tirumala hills. It lies to the north of the Sri Venkateswara temple, and most guides place it about 5 km from the main shrine, inside the Seshachalam forest belt. Pilgrims have traditionally believed that a bath or a sprinkling of this water washes away accumulated wrongs, which is how the place got its name.

Many devotees plan a Papavinasanam Tirumala taxi trip because the spot is peaceful, green and quite different from the crowded areas around the temple. The surroundings include a small Ganga shrine and a dam that holds back the stream. Visitors usually come to bathe, pray, enjoy the forest air and take photographs of the dam gate and reservoir.

Legend, water and the dam

Local tradition links the teertham with the many sacred streams and springs said to flow through the hills, all considered to arise from the grace of Lord Venkateswara. The stream here is regarded as especially purifying, and it is named alongside other well known teerthams of Tirumala in pilgrim guides.

A practical note: the natural waterfall at the site is seasonal, and several recent visitor accounts say the flow is small or dried up outside the rainy months. In such seasons, water for bathing is supplied by pipe from the Papavinasanam dam. If seeing a strong cascade matters to you, plan for the months after the northeast monsoon and confirm the current situation locally before you leave.

What to see around it

The main sights at the teertham are the bathing area, the small Ganga temple, the dam and the forest road that leads to it. The reservoir side is a pleasant place to sit for a few minutes. The hill road itself is part of the experience, with views of forested slopes and, on clear days, glimpses of the plains below.

Papavinasanam is usually combined with other stops in the hills. The Akasa Ganga waterfall and the Japali Anjaneya shrine lie on the same side of Tirumala, while the Silathoranam natural arch and Chakra Teertha are close to the temple. Beside the temple itself is the Srivari Pushkarini, the holy tank where pilgrims traditionally take a ritual dip. See our pages on these places to plan them as one local sightseeing day.

How the trip works with a cab from Tirupati

The drive from Tirupati to Tirumala is about 22 km up the ghat road, taking roughly 45 to 60 minutes depending on traffic. Tirumala trips are normally planned as one local sightseeing day, covering several spots in sequence rather than a single stop.

We are a taxi and tour-vehicle service only. We do not arrange temple entry, tickets or queue access. If you also plan to visit the Venkateswara temple, tickets and entry are handled by you directly with the temple authorities (TTD), and you should check their current rules before travelling. Access for private vehicles to some internal points in Tirumala can be regulated by TTD, so confirm locally which stops your car may drive to.

Practical tips

Start early so that you reach the teertham in the cool morning and have buffer time for the ghat road. Wear footwear that is comfortable on wet steps, keep valuables with the group, and bring a towel and spare clothes if you intend to bathe. Water on stone steps can be slippery, so take care with children and elderly family members.

Avoid feeding or approaching monkeys, which are common in the hills, and do not litter in the forest. Carry drinking water and light snacks, since facilities beyond Tirumala are limited. For families, a sedan is fine for up to four people, while an SUV or tempo traveller is better for larger groups. Because opening hours and facilities can change, treat the timings on this page as a guide and confirm locally on the day.
