Tirumala Dress Code and Temple Rules for Sevas and Darshan

The Tirumala dress code asks pilgrims to wear traditional clothes for sevas and some paid darshan types, and separate temple rules apply to everyone. This guide lists what to wear, what not to carry and what is still unclear.

Why there is a dress code

TTD introduced a traditional dress code in 2013, first for Arjitha sevas, to keep a devotional atmosphere in the temple. Over time it came to cover more categories of pilgrims. Temple conduct rules are a separate matter and apply to everyone.

Who has to follow the Tirumala dress code

The official TTD page says the dress code applies to Arjitha seva pilgrims, VIP break darshan pilgrims and those with Rs 300 and Rs 50 darshan.

For Sarva Darshan, a 2019 press report quotes TTD saying pilgrims are not required to follow it because of the long waits. Some blogs say traditional dress is still expected. Because the reports differ, the safest plan is to dress modestly and traditionally anyway.

What to wear

Men: a dhoti or pyjama with an upper cloth.

Women: a saree or half-saree with blouse, or a churidar with pyjama and an upper cloth.

Children: no official rule was found. Modest clothing is advised.

Jeans and shorts are not allowed under the dress code for a seva. Staff at entry points can stop pilgrims in non-traditional dress, according to blogs. Carry a spare traditional set of clothes, since the rules apply year round.

Temple rules to remember

Footwear is not allowed in or around the temple premises. Helmets, caps, turbans and hats are not allowed inside.

Banned in Tirumala: non-vegetarian food, liquor, tobacco and other intoxicants, and weapons and ammunition. Licensed weapons must be declared at the Alipiri checkpoint. Playing cards, leather items and large bags appear in blog lists only, not in the official rules found.

Do not wear flowers into the temple. Offer only in the hundi, and do not prostrate inside. Avoid carrying much cash or jewellery.

Mobile phones

Press reports describe a ban on mobile phones inside the temple premises, and blogs advise using lockers or cloakrooms. The official dos and don'ts page does not mention phones. The simple advice is not to carry a phone into the temple.

Queue conduct

Wait for your turn and do not rush. Avoid touts, and do not cause violence, spit or create a nuisance. Facilities along the queues, such as water, food, toilets and cloakrooms, were not verified in this research.

Please confirm before you travel

Reports differ on these points, and TTD can change rules at short notice.

  • Phone ban: press says banned, the official dos and don'ts page is silent, and blogs differ on lockers.
  • Sarva Darshan dress code: not compulsory in 2019 press, but described as expected in blogs.
  • Leather items, large bags and smartwatches appear in blog lists only.
  • No official dress rule for children was found.
  • Facilities along queues were not verified.
