About the Padmavathi temple at Tiruchanur
The Padmavathi temple Tiruchanur, also called Alamelu Mangapuram, is the main shrine of Goddess Padmavathi, the consort of Lord Venkateswara. It lies in the village of Tiruchanur, a few kilometres from Tirupati, and is run by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD).
A widely held belief among devotees is that a visit to the hill temple is complete only after paying respects to the Goddess here. That is why most pilgrim plans include Tiruchanur on the same trip as Tirumala.
Legend and significance
According to the traditional story, Padmavathi emerged from a golden lotus in the temple tank, now known as Padma Sarovaram, and later wed Lord Venkateswara. The tank still stands beside the temple and remains central to its rituals.
The Panchami Theertham festival, held on the last day of the Karthika Brahmotsavam, is associated with the Goddess emerging from the lotus. Large numbers of devotees gather for the sacred bath at the tank on that day.
The Varalakshmi Vratham in the month of Shravana is another popular occasion. Festival dates change every year, so check them locally.
What to see
The temple stands on the bank of the Padma Sarovaram, with pillared mandapams and a main sanctum in the south Indian Dravidian style. The surroundings are leafy, and vendors outside sell lotus flowers, bangles and puja items.
The tank is a peaceful spot for a short rest after the temple visit. Nearby streets have small eateries, sweet shops and stalls for coconuts and flowers.
Apart from the main shrine you will find smaller sub-shrines within the complex. Photography is usually restricted inside, so keep your phone away unless signs allow otherwise.
How the trip works with a cab
A Tirupati to Tiruchanur taxi is a short drive, which is why most people combine it with something else. A common pattern is to visit Tiruchanur in the morning and go on to Govindarajaswami, Kapila Teertham or Chandragiri later in the day.
If you are going to Tirumala as well, the sensible order depends on your own plan at the hill temple. Many families do Tiruchanur the day before or the day after, so tell the driver your schedule.
Our drivers pick you up from the airport, railway station, bus stand or hotel and wait near the temple while you are inside. Any entry, ticket or queue arrangement is handled by the pilgrim directly with the temple. We provide only the vehicle and driver.
For a full day covering many shrines, see our one day Tirupati temples tour, which includes this temple.
Practical tips
Go early on weekdays to avoid long queues. Fridays, weekends and festival days are busier, and the Karthika Brahmotsavam can be extremely crowded.
Wear comfortable, modest clothes and slip-on footwear. Leave bags and valuables in the cab where possible, since security checks can slow you down.
Because opening and closing hours are listed differently across sources, confirm locally before heading out.
For a family of four, a sedan is enough. Groups of five or more, or those with luggage and elders, usually pick an SUV or tempo traveller.
Flowers and simple puja items are sold at stalls near the entrance, if you wish to carry an offering. Keep some small change handy for these purchases, and keep your phone on silent inside.
If you arrive by train or flight and want to go straight to the temple, tell us your arrival time so the driver is waiting. Tiruchanur is only a short ride from the station and a little further from the airport, so there is rarely a need to rush.
